National Careers Week 2024

Worthing High School has been taking part in National Careers Week!

National Careers Week (NCW) runs from the 4th to the 9th March 2024. National Careers Week (NCW) is a one-week celebration of career guidance and free resources in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for career guidance activities at an important stage in the academic calendar, to help support young people to develop awareness and excitement about their future pathways.

Year Groups have had local guest speakers talking to them in assemblies about potential career pathways within their industry as well as delivery of selected presentations in school time.

Year 10 had an inspiring talk from Captain Martin Gregg who is a very experienced Pilot with British Airways and was able to advise students on all the aspects of becoming a Pilot as well as the advantages, but also the hard work involved in taking this career pathway. He also highlighted and discussed other roles available within the Airline Industry, such as Cabin Crew and Handling staff.

Year 9 were introduced to careers in Planning, Architecture, Design & Construction by ECE Architecture & Planning, a Worthing-based and nationwide award-winning Architecture practice who have been part of a large number of high profile developments.

Year 10. ECE were also able to introduce a lesson to a select group of Year 10 students who were interested in the potential Career pathways into Architecture and Planning and were involved in a proactive and very informative session with the team from ECE.

Year 7 & Year 8 were treated to an inspiring, enthusiastic and informative presentation from Crystal Mustchin who has had a rewarding career as a Zookeeper working with an amazing variety of animals at a number of zoos, including Woburn, Whipsnade and Edinburgh.

Crystal was able to share her experiences as well as photos of the animals she had worked with and students were delighted to see the video's of real life experiences in this career and the pathways to achieve this. Crystal also shared the 'wow' factor of working with animals, but was also very honest as to the hard physical & emotional work that can be a part of this role.

A massive thank you to all the individuals & organisations who kindly gave up their time to support the school and our students. We really appreciate it.

If you would like to support our students with their career pathways and opportunities, please contact Mr Fisher, our Careers Advisor, who would be delighted to discuss how you could be involved in this.

Staff have also completed and displayed posters throughout the school of their own career path, together with their top tips to students when deciding upon their future career. Lots of really useful advice and interesting first jobs, so thanks to everyone for completing them.
