Greenpower Car
Worthing High School has been competing in the Greenpower Challenge since 2018, having started with only four students. Since its inception the team has grown to incorporate students from all years and of both genders. The team has been responsible for the initial build and then subsequent development of the car into its current state.
The Greenpower Challenge has allowed our students to develop their problem solving skills, working in a team and delegating to each other in order to race together. This has been evident in the participation in events at the Goodwood Race Circuit and at the Dunsfold test track, the home for the Top Gear TV programme. 2021 was no exception, despite the restrictions imposed on the Greenpower Challenge by the pandemic, our team remained focused on competing and attended both venues. The last race at Dunsfold was the team’s best result to date, securing them an invitation to compete in the UK Grand Finals in October 2021.
The current racing team comprise of five Yr10 boys and one year 10 girl, most of whom have been involved in the team since year 7. Since the restrictions on mixed ages attending clubs has been lifted by the government, the club has expanded with more year 7 students and another year 10. Past students have gone on to studying mechanics or mechanical engineering, one has even created his own car and racing team.
The Greenpower team meet after school on a Wednesday and are involved in maintaining the existing car and in the design, development and production of a second car. The team is reliant on sponsorship and as a result would welcome any sponsors who wish to help with the continued development of the Greenpower Challenge in Worthing High school. Potential sponsors will receive an area on the car to promote their company, as well as being visible on track the school will circulate pictures of their sponsorship via a newsletter to all students and be visible on the school website. For anyone interested please contact Mr K Rasarathnam or Mr I Allen and they’ll provide further details.
As a result of their efforts this year, Worthing High school are attending Goodwood race circuit on the 10th of October. They’ll be up against leading schools across the country in this invitation Grand Final. Good luck Worthing High School and their car, Greased Lightning!
